The first in a series of brief historical reference books on shipping companies in Russia, dedicated to the history of one of the largest companies in the Russian Empire - the Russian Society of Shipping and Trade. The first Russian maritime shipping companies arose as early as the 1830s: in the Baltic - the St. Petersburg-Lubeck Shipping Company (1830), on the Black Sea - the Black Sea Steamboat Society (1833). However, the Black Sea Society could not meet the economic needs of the vast southern region. In addition, in the Crimean War of 1853-1856, the Black Sea merchant fleet suffered heavy losses. The sailing fleet was completely destroyed, and only eight of the steam ships remained. The conditions of capitalist development dictated their demands. There was an acute need to create such a merchant fleet on the Black Sea that could ensure the growing foreign trade and, first of all, grain exports from the Black Sea, Azov and Danube ports. The government was also aware of the need to populate the southern outskirts and develop a rich, yet completely unused region.
