When a modern viewer sees a picture of a Dutch painter of the 17th century: landscape, portrait, genre scene or still life, it seems natural to him that the artist was inspired by the surrounding reality and depicted it truthfully, convincingly and bright. Meanwhile, these qualities, and the genres themselves, did not exist from eternity. Neither the feudal lord nor the Catholic Church were interested in a true depiction of reality. And only the Dutch bourgeois revolution (1566-1609) gave impetus to the awakening of the creative forces of the people, the development of realistic art. Portrait painters and genre painters mastered the complex and difficult art of depicting a person's character and inner world.
In the second half of the 18th century, significant works of Dutch painting migrated to St. Petersburg. The collection continues to grow even today. The State Hermitage has one of the largest collections of Dutch paintings. This edition presents its diversity.
