The Solovetsky Monastery is located on the Big Island of the Solovetsky Archipelago, located on the White Sea. The monastery was founded in the 15th century, and in the period from the middle to the end of the 16th century, a magnificent architectural ensemble was formed here, which has survived mainly to this day. The nature of the islands of the Solovetsky archipelago is peculiar and unusual for these latitudes; despite the proximity (150 km) to the Arctic Circle, there are no severe frosts in winter, and the islands are covered with dense mixed forests. The first stone buildings of the monastery were the Refectory with the Assumption Church (1552-1557). The main building of the ensemble - the two-pillar Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior was built in 1558-1566. These main monuments of the monastery are connected (in 1602) by an extended covered passage, which is adjoined by other buildings and a high tiered bell tower, which is the compositional axis of the entire picturesque ensemble. In addition, a significant number of architectural monuments of the 16th-17th centuries have been preserved in the monastery. In 1584-1594 fortress towers and walls were built. The walls and towers are made of huge granite boulders and make an unforgettable impression of cyclopean structures, unique in world architecture. The unique nature of the Russian North left its mark on the entire architectural appearance of the remarkable ensemble; the extreme simplicity of forms, the severe fortress character of the monastery's buildings create a true artistic harmony with the landscape of the White Sea region. Located on a narrow isthmus, surrounded by the waters of a bay and a large lake, the Solovetsky Monastery is especially beautiful on the white nights of the northern spring; it leaves a deep impression of a perfect ancient Russian architectural ensemble. The originality and high perfection of the ensemble of the Solovetsky Monastery constantly attracts the attention of Soviet artists. The album contains reproductions from paintings made by the artist G.M. Manizer, which represent the author’s complete story about this masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture, executed by means of painting. The artist managed to reveal and convey the originality of the ensemble of the Solovetsky Monastery, the laconism of the figurative and expressive language of ancient architecture, which the artist always associates in his works with the unique northern landscape. The laconic, but expressive color palette of G.M.Manizer's works conveys well the characteristic tones of the northern landscape, the stingy colors of the remarkable creations of ancient architects. The introductory article belongs to P. Teltevsky.
