More info

This book, first published by decree of Peter the Great in 1705 in Amsterdam and reprinted many times in Russia and Germany, is an extensive collection of courtly, religious, natural philosophical, poetic, political, state, Masonic, heraldic and other symbols, widely widespread in literature, art and noble life of the 17th - first half of the 19th centuries. Being one of the most complete collections of emblems, without which it is impossible to imagine the artistic world of Baroque, Rococo and Classicism, the book serves, in fact, as a key and dictionary to the language of these cultures. The publication contains 840 emblems with inscriptions in Russian, Latin, French, German and English, as well as descriptions of numerous allegories and heraldic symbols. The publication contains an alphabetical index of emblems, an alawite index of inscriptions to emblems and a subject-name index. The book is intended for historians, art historians, philologists and anyone interested in the history of Russian and Western European cultures of the 16th - 18th centuries.
