The range of opinions presented in this book is incredibly wide. Many authors of the articles posted here connected the fate of the Cossacks with the future of Russia, but there were also those who advocated an independent struggle in the restoration of a sovereign state. So, for example, among the members of the Don military circle, it was widely believed that no central Russian government could be a boon for the Cossacks: neither the monarchist, nor the Kadet, nor the Socialist-Revolutionaries. The book clearly showed the ideology of the Cossacks, the history and the way of its comprehension. The Cossack Union was organized in Paris in 1924 under the leadership of the chairman of the Don military government N.M. Melnikov. By the end of the 1920s. The Union consisted of 188 Cossack organizations that existed in 18 countries of the world, excluding individuals who were not members of organizations. A significant role in the formation and development of the Union was played by its honorary chairman, Don ataman A.P. Bogaevsky. The union as an association of Cossacks of all Cossack troops ("Union of the first convocation") lasted until 1934, releasing several books and magazines. This edition is in its own way a unique document of the era. The Russian emigration, which found itself a decade later far from its homeland, having lost hope for a speedy return, came to a comprehension of its position. Attempts to look into the future and guess whether the Cossacks will remain as part of old Russia prompted the compilers of the collection to turn to the most prominent figures of the Russian emigration - Cossacks and non-Cossacks: historians, military leaders, writers, politicians of all existing movements, clergy with a request to express their opinion on several questions. All recipients (about 200) were sent a questionnaire in which it was proposed to evaluate the past of the Cossacks: the oldest South-Eastern and formed in the 19th century; characterize the strengths and weaknesses of the Cossacks; present your vision for the future of this group. Collective labor was an excellent source on the history of the Cossacks. Don, Kuban and Terek atamans A.P. Bogaevsky, V.G. Naumenko, G.A. Vdovenko, atamans of overseas Cossack villages, members of the Don military circle I.F. .Vasiliev. The letters were sent by Metropolitans Evlogii Georgievsky, Anthony Surozhsky, secretary of the Paris Archbishopric Abbé Charles Quesnay, the High Command of the White Troops represented by A.I. Denikin, A.S. Lukomsky, Baron P.N. Wrangel. Ministers and the head of the Provisional Government P.N. Milyukov, N.D. Avksentiev, A.V. Kartashev, A.F. Kerensky, such political and public figures as Prince P.D. » P.B.Struve. Among the writers whose messages were published in the collection were M.A. Aldanov and A.I. Kuprin.
