This book describes the history of the 689th Guards Sandomierz Order of Alexander Nevsky Fighter Aviation Regiment named after Air Marshal A.I. Pokryshkin. The regiment, created in 1939, glorified itself during the Great Patriotic War. Outstanding Soviet fighter pilots fought under his Battle Banner. This is the legendary ace, the first three times Hero of the Soviet Union A.I. Pokryshkin, who went through the entire war with the regiment, commanded this air unit (which is why the regiment was called "Pokryshkin", and later officially honored with the name of the famous pilot and commander). This and twice Heroes of the Soviet Union G.A. Rechkalov and A.F. Clubs that became one of the best Soviet fighter aces. Another 18 Heroes of the Soviet Union fought in the regiment, as well as hundreds of other officers, soldiers and foremen, who together brought the great Victory closer. This book is about their military work and many days of front-line feat, about the combat path of the regiment. With the end of the war, the history of the aviation unit did not end. In 1945-1952, the Pokryshkinsky regiment carried out the tasks assigned to it, deployed at the airfields of Lower Austria. After relocating to the Kaliningrad region of Russia, during the years of the Cold War, he was at the forefront of confrontation in the western theater of possible hostilities. The regiment participated in the events of 1968 in Czechoslovakia. Its pilots intercepted aircraft of a potential enemy in the sky over the Baltic. After the collapse of the USSR, the Pokryshkins became the first in Russia to force an intruder to perform a forced landing. The regiment withstood the army reforms of the 1990s and early 2000s. And to this day, the heirs of the military glory of veterans of different years are serving in the very west of our country. In the post-war history of the regiment, many events took place - dramatic, tragic, sometimes funny. But the life of the famous air unit during this period is almost unknown to a wide range of aviation enthusiasts. This book-chronicle reveals it in full. The history of the legendary regiment is inscribed in the history of the Fatherland. But the life of the country, both military and post-war, permeated through and through the fate of the people who served in the regiment. And in the book, this interweaving of the destinies of people and the country is also reflected. In it, the history of the air unit is set out in full, from its foundation to the present day - until 2014.
