The Tofalars (their pre-revolutionary name ka-ragasy, although back in the middle of the 19th century the word tofa was cited in the literature as their self-name) are now one of the small peoples of Russia (according to the 1989 census, they numbered 73 people) with the status of the peoples of the North. They are one of the most ancient Turkic-speaking peoples of the Sayans, who have been engaged in hunting and reindeer herding since ancient times. Until the end of the 20s of our century, they still roamed the Sayan mountain taiga. In the course of their historical development, the Tofalars created a unique material and spiritual culture that reflected their economic activity and allowed them to adapt to the harsh taiga nomadic life to the maximum. Comprehensive study of the characteristics of their economy, material, as well as spiritual! culture, their experience, their contribution to world civilization is of great scientific and practical importance. Their experience of managing in a limited area for many centuries without disturbing the ecological balance in nature deserves, especially in our days, close attention and study.
