S. Volin’s work was written in 1962 at the request of the so-called “Inter-University Project” to study the history of Menshevism, organized in 1959 on the initiative of a group of liberal American historians led by Leopold Haimson. Funded by several major philanthropic organizations, including the Rockefeller and Ford foundations, the project aimed to survey participants in the Menshevik movement in Russia who lived outside the USSR, mainly in the United States. A number of Mensheviks were asked to write memoirs or articles about the Social Democratic movement before and after the Bolshevik revolution. Among them was S. Volin, whose work is certainly of interest to all those who study the history of Ukraine during the era of the revolution and civil war in Russia. Published with permission from Columbia University.
