This reference book aims to eliminate certain difficulties that may arise for students of the lecture hall of the State Tretyakov Gallery when getting acquainted with ancient Russian art, both within the framework of the traditional cycle and in the cycle of lectures on iconography. Along with some specific terms directly related to the technique of ancient Russian painting, it includes theological concepts, as well as terms relating to various aspects of religious life (worship, etc.). In addition, the dictionary contains brief biographical information about the largest Orthodox theologians and about some saints, especially revered in Rus', whose images are often found in ancient Russian painting. It also includes brief information on iconography.

Дитмар Штюдеманн (Вельс/Австрия 1941-2022, Берлин) с 1972 г. работал в Министерстве иностранных дел, занимая должности в Москве, Афинах, Вене, Праге и Киеве. Большую часть своей профессиональной карьеры он провел в Москве, где стал свидетелем не только начала улучшения отношений между Востоком и Западом, но и распада Советского Союза. Во время его работы послом в Украине в 2004 году произошла "оранжевая революция".
Этот опыт сформировал его личность и интересы, которые часто выходили за рамки его обязанностей в качестве дипломата. Он увлекался литературой и культурой, интересовался историей и археологией, проявлял особый интерес к изобразительному искусству, что нашло отражение в его частной художественной коллекции.
