The proposed publication is a continuation of the already published book by the same author, “The World of Russian Icons and Monasteries.” It largely compensates for the lack of popular scientific literature on issues of Orthodoxy.

The author turns to the history of the creation of the first Christian churches, the symbolism of church architecture, and the special cult of the Mother of God in Rus'; introduces readers to the most outstanding cathedrals of Ancient Rus', which have survived to this day.

The reader will learn about the foundations of Orthodoxy and church books, about wall painting - frescoes and “earthly images of the heavenly world” - icons. The section of church painting is devoted to the consideration of specific icons, problems of iconography, the ability to “read” icons, to penetrate into their deep meaning.

Ancient legends reflected in Russian chronicles, works of famous historians, stories about Russian princes and saints, outstanding painters, ancient singers and religious composers - all this will also be of interest to the widest circle of readers, and above all students and high school students studying the history of religion and the history of art, teachers of the courses “History of Russia”, “Cultural Studies”, “History of Russian Art”.< /p>
