The author of the book is Apollon Apollonovich Korinthsky - a famous Russian ethnographer and poet of the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries, a classmate of Vladimir Ulyanov. In Soviet times, his work did not go to court; he was repressed, expelled from Leningrad and died in virtual obscurity in Tver in 1937.

His most significant and universal book, “People's Rus',” was first published in 1901 in Moscow. This is a folklore and ethnographic work in which the author supplements his more than twenty years of observations of the life of the Russian peasantry with printed materials on Russian and Slavic ethnography. Apollo of Corinth collected a wealth of ethnographic material, revealing the intricate interweaving of surviving pagan myths and rituals of Christianity in Rus', the history of all holidays, the poetic views of the Slavs on nature and the world order. How is folk Rus' alive? What are her unshakable foundations of eternal connections with her ancestors based on? Corinthsky tried to answer these and other questions in his book.
