Vladimir Gzhytsky (1895-1974) is one of the oldest Ukrainian writers. The greatest popularity was gained by his novels "To the Wide World" and "Great Expectations", which were repeatedly published in their native language and translated into Russian ("Soviet Writer", 1966). "Karmalyuk". In the novel "Oprishki" the author tells about the insurrectionary movement of peasants against the feudal lords in the 30-40s of the eighteenth century in Transcarpathia, Western Ukraine and Bukovina. This movement was led by the folk hero Oleksa Dovbush.
Karmalyuk is a novel about the peasant struggle against the landowners-serfs in Volhynia, Kiev region and Podolia under the leadership of Ustim Karmalyuk in 1830-1835.
