More info

Program works occupy a significant place in the musical heritage of the "mighty handful" composers. "Night on Bald Mountain" by Mussorgsky, "In Central Asia" by Borodin, "Scheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov constantly sound in concerts and enjoy the invariable love of listeners. Program music, which has a long tradition, was especially developed in the 19th century. In the 30s, Berlioz's program symphonies were created, in the 40s and 50s - Liszt's symphonies "Faust" and "Dante" and a number of his program symphonic poems; in the 1960s, the first program works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Mussorgsky, and Tchaikovsky appeared in Russia.
