More info

Stefan Zweig very early began to feel literature as his life calling. He is captivated by Verhaeren's courageous, democratic poetry and powerful Russian literature. Emil Verhaeren captivated the aspiring writer with the social content of his realistic poetry and revealed to him the real contradictions of life, the sharp conflicts of capitalist civilization, the origins of genuine, not fictitious, human grief.

Zweig told in detail the history of his relationship with the great Belgian poet in “Memoirs of Emil Verhaeren,” written in 1916, immediately after the news of the poet’s unexpected death reached him. This essay, lyrical in tone and objective in its overall assessment, well conveys the atmosphere in which the spiritual development of the young Zweig took place, and correctly reproduces the life situation, the circle of ideological and creative interests of Verhaeren, talks about his connections with the leading figures of Belgian art, with people from the people.

The first volume of this publication includes short stories, legends and historical miniatures “Humanity’s Finest Hours.”

Volume two includes "Memoirs of Emile Verhaeren", biographical sketches of "Balzac", "Dickens", "Marceline Debord-Valmore", "Joseph Fouche", "Magellan", "Arturo Toscanini", "Amerigo" ", from the series "Meetings with People", "Speech on the Sixtieth Birthday of Maxim Gorky."
