More info

The events of the novel take place during World War II in Switzerland. No bombs fell on Swiss soil, no cities burned. And yet, the war brought its destruction to this quiet corner of Europe. The lover of the main character Matilda, the Englishman Wetson, joins the ranks of the fighters against fascism in order to fulfill his duty as a citizen and patriot. Wetson, completely immersed in the big world of deep and strong ideas and feelings, became more and more distant from his beloved wife, wrote less and less. And she, waiting for him and living every day in fear for his life, lost her living feeling of love. Fear deprived Matilda of vitality, dulled consciousness and eradicated love.
