1958. West Berlin. Spy Maria Perlaki decides to break with her criminal past and return to her homeland, the Hungarian People's Republic. Having stolen the diary of Rainai, a war criminal, one of the leaders of the spy organization "Spearmen", she confesses to the state security authorities of the Hungarian People's Republic.

From this moment on, the novel breaks up into two storylines: the investigation into the Perlaki case, shedding light on the activities of Horthy intelligence, and the confession of Rainai himself. With cynical frankness, he talks about the dark affairs of the "Spearmen", American, British and West German intelligence services, as well as the "holy fathers" from the Vatican.

The novel covers a long period, from the 1920s to the 1960s ., and unfolds on the territory of Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and West Berlin.

The authors recreate in “Spearmen” pictures of the heroic struggle of the Hungarian communists against the Horthy regime, show the selfless work of the security officers in a free and independent Hungary, liberated in the spring 1945 by the Soviet Army.

The unusualness of the material, which is essentially an artistic treatment of court documents in the case of the "Spearmen", an entertaining plot, an abundance of sharp, exciting collisions, the original literary form of the novel - all this makes the book useful and interesting.

Translation from Hungarian by M. Popov and F. Oskolkov.
