More info

The exhibition introduces visitors to the collection of Western European art clocks from the 16th – 19th centuries, stored in the Hermitage. This unique branch of artistic craft is connected, on the one hand, with jewelry (portable table and pocket watches), on the other, with the work of sculptors, furniture makers and bronze makers (mantel, table and floor clocks). In this catalog, clocks are divided into four groups: portable table clocks - 17 exhibits, pocket clocks - 71 exhibits, stagecoach clocks - 6 exhibits, and finally - mantel, table and floor clocks - 80 exhibits. A total of 175 exhibits are described, of which 106 are presented in black and white photographic illustrations. Within each group, the material is arranged in chronological order, with minor deviations intended not to violate the typological principle. Since in the text, in addition to the names of watchmakers, there are names of bronzers, jewelers and furniture makers, a general annotated name index is given at the end of the catalog.
