The book is dedicated to the heroic defenders of the Adzhimushkay quarries. During the Great Patriotic War, in November - December 1941, a partisan detachment named after A. V. I. Lenin, and in 1943 - the partisan detachment "Red Stalingrad". For 170 days, from May to October 1942, in conditions of complete encirclement, units of the Soviet troops of the Crimean Front courageously defended themselves in the catacombs. The defense of the Central Quarries was led by Colonel P. M. Yagunov, senior battalion commissar I. P. Parakhin, Lieutenant Colonel G. M. Burmin. The detachment consisted of over 10 thousand military personnel. A large number of civilians have also accumulated here. The besieged experienced an acute shortage of water, food, and medicines. The Nazis blew up the exits from the quarries, pumped gas into the dungeon, blew up the roof of the workings. However, despite all the hardships and losses, the soldiers of the underground garrison made bold sorties to the surface, striking the enemy, constantly chaining significant enemy forces to themselves. In battles, thousands of defenders of the underground fortress died from wounds and suffocation. They died, having fulfilled their military duty to the end, they went into immortality undefeated.
