The monograph by V. T. Pashuto, published in 1968, was and remains the only work summarizing the diverse political ties of the Old Russian state with the countries of Northern, Western and Southern Europe, the Near East and the Caucasus. In it, for the first time, Ancient Russia appeared as a major European power, actively participating in the political life of the medieval world and purposefully defending its interests. The use of a wide range of both ancient Russian and foreign sources made it possible to restore many hitherto unknown episodes of Russia's relations with its near and distant neighbors, but first of all, to trace the formation and evolution of Russia's foreign policy as an integral system. The book, of course, will be of interest both to historians of Ancient Russia and medievalists, as well as to students, history teachers and everyone interested in the past of our country.
