The book is a comprehensive study of such a phenomenon of ancient Roman civilization as gladiatorial games. On the basis of a wide range of written, epigraphic and archaeological sources, the author examines the origin of gladiatorial games and related structures, professional organization, training and armament of gladiators, as well as their participation in the military-political events of the 1st century BC. BC. - IV century. n. e. Of particular interest is a detailed analysis of visual materials related to the conduct of gladiatorial games in the Northern Black Sea region, and the identification of their specifics in comparison with the traditional forms of such spectacles in the Roman Empire.
