What can you read about Leningrad? This question is heard both from tourists who first came to the banks of the Neva, and from Leningraders who want to learn more about their city. Despite the fact that an infinite number of books and articles have been written about Leningrad, the interest in the city is so great that any new attempt to tell about its history, architectural and sculptural monuments, about its modern life seems to be useful. The essay deals with buildings, monuments, ensembles of Leningrad, which are of artistic interest. The task of the essay is to acquaint the reader in a popular form with the most significant and characteristic monuments of each era. Since many of them are historical monuments at the same time, the essay focuses not only on their artistic features, but also on their historical significance. As for the data on the development of the city and its development, they are given only to the extent necessary to understand the uniqueness of this or that building or ensemble. The presentation is based on the chronological principle, i.e. Monuments are described in the order of their occurrence. Small deviations from this principle are allowed for the convenience of readers in cases where we are talking about monuments that are geographically close to each other. Ensembles of large squares are considered as unified artistic monuments, in connection with those structures that were decisive for them.
