The dictionary is a reference publication that includes more than 7500 articles on all branches of biology: physical and chemical biology, genetics, cytology, anatomy and morphology, embryology, physiology, ecology, evolutionary theory, etc.; a significant place in the dictionary is given to specific groups of organisms from species to kingdoms, nature protection. The dictionary contains about 1000 text drawings, 29 inserts (58 tables). The dictionary is intended for biologists, specialists in the fields of science related to biology, teachers of universities, institutes, secondary school teachers, students and everyone interested in wildlife. This book is the first attempt to create a universal encyclopedic dictionary of biology in Russian. The urgent need for a fairly complete encyclopedic-type biological reference book has been felt for a long time and is dictated both by the importance of scientific results obtained in various areas of biology in the 20th century, and by the rapidly increasing significance of these results for a number of other sciences and for practice. It is generally recognized that since the middle of the 20th century, biology has firmly taken one of the leading places in modern natural science. Particularly significant were the successes in the 1950s and 1960s in molecular biology, a direction whose birth and development is associated with the widespread penetration of the methods and ideas of physics, chemistry, and mathematics into biology. The discovery of the chemical nature of the genetic material (DNA double helix), the ways of storing and implementing hereditary information, the explanation of the principles of the functioning of biological systems by processes occurring at the molecular level - these and other achievements have received great fame (which can probably be compared with the popularity of the theory of relativity in 20s or nuclear physics - in the 40s-50s) and stimulated the development of many traditional biological sciences.
