Memories of a man of amazing fate, Willy Birkemeier, who, at the age of sixteen, was captured by the Soviet Union and was sent to the USSR. After going through hardships and humiliation, he learned Russian and became friends with many of those whom he had only recently considered enemies. In Mariupol, at a metallurgical plant where captured Germans worked, he met a simple Russian girl, Nina, who became his first love. When the prisoners were allowed to return to Germany, they parted, seemingly forever. But after fifty-two years, the program "Wait for me" managed to find Nina and their daughter Tatyana, whom Willy Birkemeier saw for the first time.
