Academic publication, published in 1961-1976. - the first domestic encyclopedia dedicated to the history of peoples around the world; is for reference only; About 25 thousand articles were published. The encyclopedia is designed to help the reader navigate the development of the world historical process from ancient times to the present day, to provide information about enormous social changes. One of the features of the Encyclopedia is attention to issues of historiography, coverage of the most important problems of history in literature of various directions. In order to improve reference, many articles are provided with detailed chronologies, which are components of the articles. Encyclopedia articles are accompanied by statistical tables, maps (historical, political, ethnographic), diagrams, and illustrations. The bibliography includes publications of documents, historical sources (chronicles, chronicles, collections of legal acts, etc.), works of Russian pre-revolutionary and Soviet historians, foreign literature.
