The reader has had the fortunate opportunity to get acquainted with a wonderful study - a multi-volume work by the English historian E. Gibbon, the subject of which is the history of the Roman and Byzantine empires from the "golden age" of the Antonines to the fall of the Second Rome - Constantinople. The proposed publication is a monument to the historical thought of two eras - the second half of the 18th century, the century of the Enlightenment, when E. Gibbon worked, and the 19th century, when his work was published with comments by another prominent historian, the representative of French science F. Guizot. This explains the careful attitude of the new publishers both to the text of E. Gibbon and to the text of F. Guizot’s notes, as well as to the Russian edition of this work.
