Kuznetsov (1931-1985), a well-known Soviet Tibetologist and Buddhologist, tells about Bon, the ancient religion of Tibet, which spread long before the advent of Christianity in Central Asia from Mesopotamia to Baikal, from the Deccan to the Pamirs. Based on translations from the Tibetan language of the original writings on the history of Bon and the treatises of its legendary founder Shenrab Miwo, the author traces the prehistory of this religion up to the time of the ancient Persian kings Cyrus and Xerxes, also linking the concepts of Bon with the religious ideas of Sumer and with the later reforms of Zoroaster. Bon is presented by Kuznetsov not as a primitive religion of worshiping the forces of nature, but as a developed religious system that competed with Buddhism, mutually enriched by them and retained its position in the culture of Tibet to this day.
