Ancient Salerno, located in the depths of the Gulf of Pestan (Campania), from the beginning of the II century BC. e. was known as a place of rest and, perhaps, as a resort place. Ancient Roman medicine apparently already appreciated the natural data of this seaside corner.

Already in the 9th century, its own medical school arose in Salerno. The best of what was created by ancient medicine was carefully stored and developed in Salerno. XII-XIII centuries were the time of its highest prosperity. The book includes the well-known works of the Salerno school: the poem "The Color of Medicine of Salerno" and the famous "Salerno Code of Health" by the philosopher and physician Arnold of Villanova.
