Jean-Auguste-Domiyik Ingres - one of the most outstanding artists of France - was a subtle painter and brilliant draftsman, the author of excellent portraits, various historical and genre compositions. Nevertheless, his contemporaries, just like his descendants, never stopped and never stop arguing about the merits of the works he created, evaluating their features in different ways. The innovation of this master and the depth of his use of old artistic traditions, the correlation of the principles of classicism and romanticism in his work, and, finally, the place of Ingres' heritage in the history of French art - each of the researchers gives his own answers to all these questions, and their judgments are often contradictory. Not a single monograph devoted to Ingres has yet appeared in Soviet art history literature. Thus, to a large extent, the task of this work is also determined - to consider the life and work of the master, to answer, to the best of the author's ability, to each of the questions posed here.
