A novella is a kind of short story. It originated in Italy over 600 years ago. The short story owes its origin to various types of oral storytelling, but first of all to anecdotes and facets (facecia is a sharp word, mockery). From them comes the energetic laconicism of the narration, the amusingness of the short story, the sharpness of the denouement.
The Italian Renaissance short story is presented in this edition by the most famous works of outstanding short story writers of the 14th-16th centuries. The material selected by the literary critic and translator A.M. Efros reflects the richness and diversity of Italian short stories and quite fully illustrates the most important stages in the development of this genre in Italian literature of the Renaissance.
