Born on September 26, 1932 in Dushanbe. Father is a journalist, mother is a teacher of mathematics. In May 1941, he moved to Zaporozhye with his father, then the war, evacuation, and further movements across the territory of the USSR. He lived in the Stavropol Territory, in the Kuibyshev Region, in the Vologda Region, again in Zaporozhye, in the Crimea and in Moscow. He worked as a shepherd, carpenter, mechanic, aircraft mechanic, instructor of the rural district executive committee, editor of the All-Union Radio. Four years (1951-55) served as a soldier. He studied when he had the opportunity, in an evening school, out of ten classes he graduated from five: the first, fourth, sixth, seventh and tenth. I studied at the Pedagogical Institute for a year and a half. In the army he began to write poetry. Then he switched to prose. The first story "We live here" was published in the journal "New World" in 1961. Then the stories and novels "The Distance of Half a Kilometer", "I Want to Be Honest", "Two Comrades", "The Lady", "The Degree of Trust" were published. In 1962 he was admitted to the Writers' Union of the USSR. Since 1966, he has been involved in the human rights movement. Since 1968, he was persecuted for his human rights activities and the impartial depiction of Soviet reality in the novel The Life and Extraordinary Adventures of a Soldier Ivan Chonkin. In 1974 he was expelled from the Writers' Union. In December 1980, he was forced to emigrate, in 1981, by decree of L. Brezhnev, he was deprived of Soviet citizenship, which was returned 10 years later by decree of M. Gorbachev. Lived in Germany and the USA. In addition to "Chonkin", the books "By mutual correspondence", "Ivankiada", "Shapka", "Moscow 2042", "Anti-Soviet Soviet Union", the plays "Tribunal" and "Fictitious Marriage", stories, essays, feuilletons were first published abroad , fairy tales and poems.
