Alexander II - the Russian emperor since 1855, who went down in history as a reformer tsar, under whose leadership a whole range of reforms was prepared and carried out: the abolition of serfdom, judicial, zemstvo, military and many other reforms that opened the way to changes state and social structure of the country. In the reign of Alexander II, the accession to Russia of the Caucasus (1864), Kazakhstan (1865), most of Central Asia (1865–1881) was completed. A number of attempts were made on the life of Alexander II (1866, 1867, 1879, 1880), and he was killed by Narodnaya Volya. The author of this fundamental work saw his task in “gathering together numerous testimonies about individual moments and episodes in the life and work of Tsar Alexander Nikolayevich and, supplementing them with his own research, compiling an accurate and, if possible, complete pragmatic summary of the events of his reign and personal participation in them. or the influence of the emperor on them in the field of politics, both domestic and foreign. The author based his work on materials studied by him in the State and Main St. Petersburg Archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in the archives of the State Council, the former III Branch of His Own Imperial Majesty's Chancellery, in the Military Scientific Archive of the General Staff.
