The domestic audience is well aware of the achievements of the Flemish and Dutch painters of the 17th century. Paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordans, Rembrandt, Ruisdael, Ostade and their contemporaries are well represented in the largest museums in Russia and the CIS countries, and above all in the State Hermitage Museum in Leningrad, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow and the State Museum Western and Eastern art in Kiev. At the exhibition of Flemish and Dutch drawings of the 17th century, visitors to these museums were able to appreciate the contribution of the outstanding draftsmen of Flanders and Holland of that time to the world treasury of art.
The exhibition was formed from the collections of six museums in Belgium (the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Royal Library Albert I in Brussels, the City Office of Engravings and the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent and the Groning Museum in Bruges), the Dutch Museum Beumaps-Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Netherlands Institute in Paris. The exhibition gave a vivid and fairly complete picture of both the development of drawing in the 'golden age' of both national schools, and the nature of the Flemish and Dutch part of the collections of these museums.
