The relations that linked Germany and the Soviet Union before the start of World War II determined one of the most fatal stages in world history. This "calm before the storm" has been analyzed by a huge number of researchers. Nevertheless, the historian Alfred Meyer, in collaboration with Gustav Hilger, who in the pre-war years served as an adviser to the German embassy in Moscow, managed to take a fresh look at long-known facts. He not only analyzed in detail the features of Nazi-Soviet cooperation, but was also able to shed light on the ideas, motives of actions and the general worldview of a person from among those who seriously influenced Germany's foreign policy in the 20s and 30s of the XX century.
