The study of the Armenian manuscript book began at the end of the 19th century. The wide interest in the art of the Armenian handwritten book is explained by its ancient and long cultural tradition, aesthetic significance, high artistic merit and originality. The diversity of manuscript schools and styles, the personalities of miniaturists and scribes are surprising. The purpose of this publication is to present the manuscript books of the Matenadaran and on their basis to show the evolution of the illustrated Armenian manuscript book from the time of its inception to its replacement by the printed book. The publication presents the structure and art of designing and illustrating a manuscript book as a whole, in the unity of all elements.
