This textbook is intended for the 1st year of institutes and faculties of foreign languages. It can also be used by other higher educational institutions for which a foreign language is a major subject. The textbook was compiled in accordance with the program of the Ministry of Higher Education for the 1st year of foreign language institutes and is designed for approximately 650-700 classroom hours. The purpose of the textbook is to develop students' solid skills in pronunciation, oral and written speech, understanding without a dictionary of adapted fiction and political literature and lead them to reading with a dictionary of simple original texts. In this second edition (the first one was published in 1971), a number of phonetic sections and grammatical topics have been revised and supplemented, the lexical part of the textbook has been improved, the number of exercises has been increased, additional texts have been revised and provided with dictionaries and exercises.
