The action takes place in post-revolutionary Odessa and its environs. The son of Professor Volodya Patrikeev, yesterday's high school student, becomes the head of the Odessa district police department and, by order of the head of the operational department, together with the policeman Grishchenko, who was placed under his command, fights in the village with local moonshiners, horse thieves and speculators. The former forward of the high school football team, who dreams of becoming Sherlock Holmes, tries to use his methods and techniques. And subsequently he has to challenge Chervny himself - the crime boss who keeps the entire city in fear.
