[First edition – rare]. Tromholt, S. Games with matches: Tasks and entertainment / Sophus Tromholt. - Odessa: Mathesis, 1907. - 146 p., [3] l. ad: ill.; 16x12.7 cm.

Bound in calico.

The author of the book is Sophus Tromholt, a Danish astrophysicist and amateur photographer (his collection of photographs of Laplanders and the Northern Lights from 1882-1883 is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List!). In addition, he published this book of puzzles, “Games with Matches,” which was translated into Russian by the Odessa publishing house “Matesis” in 1907. The book was a wild success, went through many reprints and is still being reprinted.

This is the first and extremely rare edition of “Games with Matches.” So rare that it is missing from Worldcat and the largest Russian libraries, and has not been found missing on auction sites.

Mathesis is the first special natural science private publishing house in the Russian Empire. Founded in Odessa by brilliant mathematicians V.F. Kagan and S.O. Shatunovsky and astronomer A.R. Orbinsky. All three studied and subsequently worked at the Imperial Novorossiysk University in Odessa, which, by the way, exists to this day. The publishing house was distinguished by a high level of scientific editing of publications.

The elegant publishing sign was designed by the Ukrainian artist and graphic artist, master of watercolor miniatures Ambrose Andreevich Zhdakha (1855-1927).
