More info

John Fowles (born 1926) is a world-famous writer whose works are considered to be modern classics. Debuting in the early 1960s, he won a resounding fame when, unexpectedly for himself, the novel The Collector (1963) took a strong position on the bestseller lists. Since then, he has written several outstanding works that have won international recognition, among them the novel "The Mistress of a French Lieutenant" (1969). The time of action - the end of the 60s of the XIX century, Victorian England - was chosen by Fowles partly from the desire to enter into controversy with fashionable pseudo-Victorian novels, to lure the reader with a spicy love plot, numerous household details in the "retro" style, colorful characters and genre scenes. All this is in the novel. But there is something else - the drama of ideas, the psychology of intimate relationships, and, finally, the history of the formation of a person, interpreted as a choice between feeling and duty.
