The first volume of the "History of Russian Soviet Literature" covers the period from the October Revolution to the end of the 1920s. It contains chapters that give a historical analysis of the literary process and characterize the views of V.I. Lenin and A.V. Lunacharsky on the problems of Soviet culture and literature; monographic chapters are devoted to the work of A.M. Gorky, A. Serafimovich, D. Furmanov, I. Babel, A. Green, V. Mayakovsky, D. Bedny, S. Yesenin and others, reviews of journalism and criticism of the international relations of Soviet literature, chronicle of literary life.

The second volume of the "History of Russian Soviet Literature" covers the period from the beginning of the 1930s to the Great Patriotic War. The volume has been significantly revised and supplemented with new material. The regularities and originality of the literary process of the 1930s are considered on the basis of an in-depth study of its problems and stylistic features of the work of the greatest writers and poets of the period under study. Chapters devoted to the work of Malyshkin, Ilf and Petrov, Isakovsky and others have been improved and updated.

The third volume of the "History of Russian Soviet Literature" characterizes the literature of the period of the Great Patriotic War and the first post-war years (until 1954). It contains chapters that give a historical analysis of the literary process, and monographic chapters devoted to the work of A. Fadeev, F. Gladkov, M. Prishvin, B. Gorbatov, P. Pavlenko, V. Kataev, F. Panferov, N. Tikhonov, B. Pasternak, S. Marshak, I. Selvinsky, A. Surikov.

The fourth volume of the "History of Russian Soviet Literature" is devoted to characterizing the literature of 1954-1965. The book opens with an introductory chapter that examines the features and patterns of the literary development of this period. The "Introduction" is followed by the chapter "Socialist Realism and Modern World Literature".

The monographic chapters of the fourth volume analyze the work of M. Sholokhov, K. Fedin, L. Leonov, I. Ehrenburg, K. Paustovsky, M. Shaginyan, K. Simonov, A. Akhmatova, A. Tvardovsky, A. Prokofiev and others

The volume also includes a section on the international relations of Russian Soviet literature and the Chronicle of Literary Life. At the end of the volume there is an index to all four volumes of this edition.

Основано в 1945 году в лагере для перемещённых лиц Мёнхенгоф в американской зоне оккупации Германии. В 1947 году издательство переезжает в Лимбург-на-Лане, а в январе — во Франкфурт-на-Майне. В 1992 году открыт филиал в Москве.
