The historical fate of the Kurdish “people is peculiar and tragic. Kurds lived near the most ancient centers of world civilization (Mesopotamia and Iran, Syria and Phoenicia, Urartu and Armenia). Despite this, they remained aloof from its achievements and by the end of the 19th century, “culturally and in terms of socio-economic and political development, they lagged noticeably behind most peoples of the Near and Middle East. Kurdistan was one of the largest and most powerful powers in Western Asia. The Kurds themselves, in their entire centuries-old history, have never been able to create their own state. Admittedly, the Kurds are a proud, freedom-loving and warlike people. Neither the Turkish sultans, nor the Iranian shahs, nor the British imperialists, nor any other colonizers could completely subdue them to their domination. At the same time, the reactionary forces often managed to direct the Kurdish movements in the right direction for themselves, which served as a source of great misfortune for all the peoples who inhabited Kurdistan, including (and perhaps in the first place) for the Kurds.
< br />Kurdistan since ancient times lay at the crossroads of the caravan routes that connected Iran and Mesopotamia with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea and served not only as trade, but also as migration routes. Countless hordes of conquerors passed through this "crossroads" of Western Asia, partially settling in its valleys. Therefore, the ethnic composition of the population of Kurdistan over time became very diverse: along with the Kurds, Armenians, Turks, Persians, Arabs, Assyrians (Aysors), Azerbaijanis, Shahsevens, Lurs and other nationalities lived here. The Kurdish tribes, as a result of numerous wars and invasions, were pushed back into remote and inaccessible mountainous regions, cut off from the outside world and, one might say, from progress and civilization.
