Voronikhin Andrei Nikiforovich [1759-1814], Russian architect, representative of classicism. The early architectural works of Voronikhin (the interior decoration of the Stroganov Palace in St. Petersburg, 1793; the Stroganov dacha on the Black River, 1795-96; the house in the Gorodnya estate of the Kaluga province, 1798) are distinguished by the clarity of composition, the elegance and refinement of details. In his work, Voronikhin continued the best traditions and achievements of Russian architecture. Developing the principles of palace compositions by Bazhenov, I. E. Starov, Kazakov, Voronikhin created a new simple and austere type of public building, expressing the power and grandeur of the Russian state in its architectural image. The search for a large monumental style marked the most outstanding work of Voronikhin - the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg. The construction of this building on the central highway marked the beginning of the creation of large urban ensembles on Nevsky Prospekt. The town-planning beginning also plays a major role in Voronikhin's subsequent works - the building of the Mining Institute, with a monumental colonnade facing the Neva and emphasizing the entrance to the city from the sea, the unrealized projects of St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ in Moscow (1813). Voronikhin also participated in the construction of palace and park ensembles in Peterhof and Pavlovsk, the Bratsevo estate. All buildings of this period, made in the principles of the Russian Empire with the use of new, lightweight structures and natural building materials, are characterized by great architectural and artistic expressiveness, achieved by the clarity of spatial composition, the contrast of large smooth wall planes with colonnades, sculpture and large, rich ornamentation. Of great importance was the activity of Voronikhin in the field of applied art - furniture, lighting fixtures, glass, stone and porcelain vases, the projects of which he created in an organic combination of the interior with architecture.
