Jorge Amado (b. 1912), a classic of Brazilian literature, was and remains one of the most popular foreign writers in Russia. His books "Captains of the Sand", "Antiquities Shop", the famous "Dona Flor" won him worldwide fame. The novel "The Disappearance of a Saint" (1988) is written in the best traditions of "magical realism". Its action develops in Bahia - the author's hometown, described in many of his works. The statue of St. Barbara, brought from the village church to the exhibition, comes to life and begins to actively interfere in the life of the Bahian people; "puts things in order" in their family life, settles quarrels, helps to triumph of love and justice; shame hypocrisy and hypocrisy.
