The action of the famous novel by Prosper Merimee, a brilliant playwright and master of literary prose, takes place during a religious massacre, which in history was called St. Bartholomew's Night. The theme of religious wars, the denunciation of religious fanaticism, which has now acquired unexpected urgency at the beginning of the 3rd millennium, is revealed in this text with extraordinary force. In the center of the historical canvas is the young Huguenot nobleman Bernard de Mergy, who is in love with the court lady Diana de Turgy.
