A tragic and contradictory picture of the life of representatives of the white emigration is depicted in Alexei Tolstoy’s wonderful story “Emigrants,” the exciting detective-adventurous plot of which is combined with an almost documentary reflection of the events of European history in the first half of the twentieth century.

Alexei Tolstoy, sparing no colors, accurately depicts the emigrant life of Paris of officers and aristocrats, members of the imperial family, women from high society, tired and ordinary people vegetating almost in poverty.

The novel was first published in 1931 under the title Black Gold. It was written almost hot on the heels of events and is based on the real experience of the author, and genuine historical episodes became the frame for a fascinating plot full of unexpected twists.
