The first volume includes the main work of the famous researcher Gombozhab Tsybikov (1873-1930) - `Buddhist pilgrim at the shrines of Tibet`, which put the author into the ranks of the world's leading Tibetologists.

The book tells about the journey of Gombozhab Tsybikov to Tibet. The work of G. Tsybikov is a very valuable source about the Tibetans, their customs and culture. The author was a direct witness to the life of Tibetan monks and pilgrims, his merit was a complete description of Tibetan shrines. G. Tsybikov's book appeared due to the fact that, on the instructions of the Russian Geographical Society, under the guise of a pilgrim, hiding a camera in a prayer drum, he managed to penetrate into a closed to outsiders region. During the two years spent in Lhasa, Tsybikov visited many monastic centers and studied Tibetan medicine. Not a single researcher of Tibet could compete with Tsybikov in terms of the amount of material collected. In his book, Tsybikov describes visiting the largest cities and religious centers of Tibet: Gumbum, Labran in Amdo, Lhasa, Galdan, Braibun and Sir, the residence of the Panchen Lama - the Dashi-Lhunbo monastery, the ancient capital of Tibet, Zetan and the Samyai monastery.

The book provides information about the socio-economic and political life of Tibet, history and geography.

The second volume contains diaries and travel reports of the scientist to Mongolia in 1895, to China in 1909, to Urga in 1927, works on the Transbaikalian Cossacks and the ethnography of the Buryats.
