Peveril Peak is another historical novel by the outstanding English writer Walter Scott (1771-1832), dedicated to England in the second half of the 17th century. The book takes us back to England, in 1660, during the restoration of the monarchy and the return to the homeland of King Charles II Stuart (1630-1685). This novel is actually a continuation of the book "Woodstock, or the Cavalier", if the king himself is considered the main character of the work. As the reader remembers, in Woodstock we parted ways with Charles, who was in exile abroad, the founder of the Republic, Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), died in England, and the people again waited for their monarch. As you know, a kind of "inquisition" raged in the country at that time (1660-1680), several religious and political movements were at enmity with each other: Catholics and Protestants, supporters of the republic and the monarchy, etc. This confrontation, with the obvious non-resistance of King Charles II, resulted in the so-called "papist" (Catholic) conspiracy of 1678, fictional, having absolutely no real ground and entailing certain bloody results. Against the background of the historical events listed above, the writer tells about the fate of two English families that were at war with each other: a representative of an ancient family, Jeffrey Peveril, and the “ignoble” son of a merchant, Major Bridgnorth. This enmity, fortunately, did not prevent the union of two lovers from the opposing families of Sir Julian Peveril and Alice Bridgnorth.
