The book is printed based on the manuscript of N. N. Volkov "The Sami of the USSR (Lapps )" 1946 with abbreviations.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Volkov - Soviet ethnographer, researcher of the life and everyday life of Russian Lapps (Sami).

As an employee of the Europe department of the Institute of Anthropology, Archeology and Ethnography, he studied the Kola Peninsula in 1935, 1936, 1940. For publishing the book “Skopchestvo and Sterilization” in 1937, he was expelled from the CPSU(b). Author of a number of articles in the book “Peoples of the USSR”. In July 1941, he volunteered for the front, was wounded, and was captured while surrounded. Released from the camp in May 1945. In 1946, he prepared the manuscript of the book “Russian Sami” (one of the best books on this topic in world loparistics; published in 1995 with the assistance of the Sami Institute in Kautokeino, Norway). In 1947 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on the topic “The Sami of the USSR.” On trumped-up charges he was arrested in November 1947 and sentenced to 10 years. Died in the camp. In August 1989 he was rehabilitated.
