This book is the first of two dedicated to the history of Russian award medals. It covers the period of the XVIII - early XX century.
The word "medal" comes from the Latin "metallum", which means a metal badge for an award. And the term "phaleristics" (an auxiliary discipline that studies award signs) comes from the Latin word "phalara" - a large medal or plaque with some image on it. Something similar was worn on the chest as a symbol of personal dignity and courage by Roman legionnaires.
