A 1992 best-selling romantic novella by American writer Robert James Waller that tells the story of a married Italian-American woman living on a farm in Madison County, Iowa in the 1960s. While her husband and kids are at the state fair, she begins an affair with a National Geographic photographer from Bellingham, Washington, who is visiting Madison County to create a photo essay on covered bridges in the area. The novel is presented as a novelization of a real story, but in fact it is completely fictional. The novel is one of the best-selling books of the 20th century, with over 60 million copies sold worldwide. In 1995, it was made into a feature film, and in 2013 a musical was staged.
