In fact, Jane Doe is an anthropologist and an expert on shamanism. But now she is nothing, just a shadow. After feigning her own suicide, she lives under an assumed name in Miami with a sick little girl she picked up off the street. A series of ritualistic murders are taking place in Miami, leaving the city on the brink of panic. The investigation is carried out by detective Jimmy Paz, who manages to find witnesses who were at the crime scene. But they all as one cannot remember anything. Paz comes to a disappointing conclusion - they just put a spell on them. To his own regret, he turns out to be right, because the events in a modern civilized city are more and more reminiscent of a hellish cocktail of a mixture of spells of African sorcerers and voodoo magic.
